Volume 91 Chapter 3 The Rotary Club of Hyannis January 24, 2008
Log Editor: Duncan Macallister
Doc Mosby and table started us off with ‘My Country Tis of Thee’. Lois André gave the invocation
Table Talk: Joe Gatto is a fan of two NFL teams, New England Patriots and the New York Giants, 2nd time in his life that he is rooting against the Giants. How does one bank lose $7.1 billion dollars in one day, just ask our friends in France.
Rick Walters announced our visiting guests and Rotarians.
Alan White joined us from the Osterville Club. Lois André introduced the students from Barnstable High School
Doug Burke introduced our guest speaker, Abigail Clark, a Park Ranger with the Army Corp of Engineers at the Cape Cod Canal…she holds the title of the Environmental/Natural Resource Specialist. She began her career at the canal in 2004…the Corp of Engineers is split into four subsets: military, Civil Works, Navigation and Homeland Security. There are more than 17,000 miles of waterways that are under Corp governance. Cape Cod Canal is one of the busiest locations that the Corp oversees with between 3.4MM and 4.0MM visitors per year.
Fun Facts: Captain Miles Standish first envisioned the canal. Between 1880 and 1900, as commerce increased, there was an average of 1 shipwreck/week along the Outer Cape shoals. August Perry Belmont and Chief Engineer William Barkley Parsons oversaw the beginning of construction of the canal in 1909. 1911 – the railroad and transport draw bridges began construction. 5 years later and 20,000,000 cubic meters of soil removed saw the opening of the canal at Foley’s Dyke. July 29th, 1914 was the grand opening (Franklin Delano Roosevelt attended). Opened to the public the next day at 8:00AM. Belmont was losing money. US government purchased on 3/30/28. Toll was eliminated, canal began expansion, 1300 jobs created during depression. Railroad bridge expanded to 540 feet (at one point longest in the world). 20,000 vessels use Canal annually,
Answers to good questions asked by Rotarians. There are boat tours of the Canal operated by Hy-Line. There is a tunnel 4ft in diameter that spans the Canal, provides fuel for power plant. Two visitor centers, Buzzards Bay and Sandwich opened from May to October, 25,000 visitors in Sandwich alone in 2007. The Canal has never been closed
The winning ticket in the 50/50 raffle was held by Steven Hayes
Birthdays were celebrated for Charlie Powers and Judi Matson

Volume 91 Chapter 2 The Rotary Club of Hyannis January 17, 2008
Log Editor: Miriam Morse
Today’s meeting was chaired by President Elect Joe Cotellessa who led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Steve Baty and his table chose God Bless America as our opening song. Milton Penn delivered the invocation spelling out Rotary.
Today’s visiting Rotarians were Carl Riddell and Alan White from the Osterville Club. Sharon Hawkins introduced her guest, Jeff Myers, the Executive Director of the Cape Cod Conservatory. Steve Baty led the welcome song.
Chuck Carey introduced our guest speaker today, Lucien Poyant whose topic was the Barnstable Charter Commission. Mr. Poyant’s presentation included a review of the past Charter Commission work which changed Barnstable’s status from town to city. He pointed out the flaws and shortcomings which exist in our manager-council form of government and proposed remedies to correct these weaknesses. Under the existing charter the town council is deeply involved in the day-to-day executive business.
The Charter Commission will consider whether the town should have an elected mayor instead of the current setup, in which the town council appoints a town manager. Mr. Poyant considers it important that the present charter be revised to permit voters to elect the chief executive of the city and that the town council be an at large council. Ideally Mr. Poyant recommends that a Mayor be elected. During the next three months there will be public hearings in each of the villages for public participation in the thought process for the charter. He strongly urged everyone to attend these meetings.
Bob Hesse won the 50/50 raffle and donated the funds to the Rotaract Club.
Birthdays this week were: Lisa Hergenrother and John Cotellessa. Steve Baty led the Happy Birthday song.
Ralph Hansen announced that the Hyannis Rotary Club had won the challenge of the Kettle Collection for the Salvation Army by collecting $790 to Osterville’s $278.28.
Eric Hieser announced that the Karol Wyckoff Art Scholarship Raffle has started with a Karol Wyckoff Rockport Harbor painting as the prize. Ticket information was provided to each table. This project funds the Karol Wyckoff Art Scholarship which is a $1500. Scholarship awarded to an art student for three consecutive years. Ticket order forms can be given to Eric for the drawing on April 17th.
Past President Joe Gatto reported that George Bradlau had surgery in December and is at Liberty Commons. He is not up for visitors; however cards and notes would cheer him.
Happy Bucks: President Elect Joe Cotellessa reported that at his annual physical he had shrunk an inch. Rick Walters was happy for the completion of the beautification project at Sherman Square. He commended Randy Gold and his committee on a job well done. Past President Joe Gatto was happy for the bell ringing group. Eric Hieser was happy that the applications for enrollment at the Sturgis School have increased 50% in the past two years. Alan White and Carl Riddell were happy to buy tickets for the Karol Wyckoff Scholarship Raffle. Don Palmer was happy for the good job Eric Hieser did with the raffle report. Anne Walther Hayes was interested in how she should title the 4th of July Parade: Town of Barnstable or the City of Barnstable. Milton Penn was happy that his garden produced a bunch of kale for his wife’s kale soup.
